Timing Is Everything

I’m lucky enough to have a fairly large yard to grow vegetables but you don’t need much space to grow the basics. Besides, the biggest mistake most people make when they start a vegetable garden for the first time is they tend to grow too much, which means they produce more than they can consume followed by nothing.

Timing your planting is of utmost importance to ensure that you are harvesting all year round. Instead of planting half a dozen of each vegetable, try planting one of everything you want to grow. Having said that, be selective. If you’re just starting out, choose 4 vegetables. I tend to choose to grow vegetables that have the most bland flavour when you buy them from the store. So tomatoes are top of my priority list! My next priority is growing vegetables that cost the most to buy. Leave some space for the next crop and as a rule of thumb plant new seedlings when the first ones begin to flower. That way, you should have a continuous supply.
